Sound installation featuring a print, a wooden nightstand, a lamp, and a stationary telephone with audio
Description
This artwork stems from the longing within a relationship strained by distance. How the imprint of someone you love remains in your life, lingering even in their absence.
When I moved here, my boyfriend was drafted into the military. Seeing each other every day was replaced by irregular phone calls and scattered text messages. Sometimes I wouldn’t hear from him for weeks. Yet even when he wasn’t on the other end of the phone, I continued updating him about the small moments of my daily life, never missing a goodnight text describing what my day had been like.
I transcribed these messages and the silences between them and invited two friends and sound artists to create a sound piece based on them, as well as on their own experiences being in a long-distance relationship. You can listen to this work by picking up the phone on the nightstand.
